One. What is a Tipper Trailer?

 

A tipper trailer is a big trailer that usually lifts when dumping its hall in a chosen location. It is similar to the dump truck trailer and is used synonymously to mean the same thing.

However, there are small tweaks here and there that make each one of them unique. There are different tipping options but the main ones are the rear and the side tippers.

Tipper trailers will help you to carry and offload bulk goods in a very easy and efficient manner. At the end, your operations will be highly affordable.

They are become such a wonderful solution especially in handling big jobs. Safety in operations is well taken care of through a well-designed mechanism of offloading your goods.

With tipper trailers, they are applicable in the construction, agriculture and recycling industries among many other areas. They come in different shapes and types. Therefore, you will have variety based on your specific needs and requirements.

1.1 Important Parts of a Tipper Trailer

 

The body of a tipper trailer is a conventional framework that has a bed with detachable side walls. Conventional designs are usually linked through a rear hinge to frame on which wheels are supported and mounted.

The set-up is then fixed to a guide for the sliding hinge. The front of the bed plate is fitted with features for latching to the tow bar. The bed is again fitted with either a single leg or multiple retractable legs that are used as a table.

The connecting rod is usually hinged at its ends to oscillate at respective axes that are parallel to the trailer axes.

Regardless of the number used, the connecting rods serve to link up the sliding hinge to the parts of the wheel-carrying frame structure. Check figure 2 and figure 3 for more details.

The hinging of the frame is normally done at the rear section and at the same time has the trailer wheels mounted thereon. Shock absorber means could be installed in between the hinged frame and the wheels.

One side of the connecting rod is hinged at the frame. There are blocks that are usually attached to the rear part of the frame and are supposed to touch the ground.

In many traditional designs, the frame is also used to support brake lights, mudguards, indicator lights as well as housings used for receiving a jack as would be needed for wheel changing.

 

Two: Types of Tipper Trailers

 

There are two types of tipper trailers namely:

 

2.1 Rear Tipper

 

A rear tipping trailer also known as a rear tipper trailer works by offloading cargo towards the back area. They are commonly used to carry construction material such as sand and stones as well as other materials such as coal.

Ideally, you can use it for loading industrial raw materials or any other solid material used in construction. The rear tipper design is meant to facilitate the offloading process.

Once the back of your trailer is locked, you can load your cargo in that position. On arriving at your destination, the front side of the tipper trailer gets raised causing your cargo to drop off from the back.

The bucket of your tipper trailer has been built with a thicker steel plate to sustain the weight of the cargo that is usually of hard materials. This way, the tough steel plate prevents the cargo from damaging your trailer.

The Rear tipper is suitable for cargo with a large rest angle. It is important to note that the Rear tipper cannot be more than 12m long. Any truck longer than that may be dangerous.

 

2.2 Side Tipper

 

A side tipper is an alternative to the rear tipper. This type of dump truck trailer allows you to offload your goods from the side. Still, you can use it for transporting solid building materials such as sand and stones among others.

The side tipper makes use of hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors and a dump-bucket to one side. The remaining side gives you the option of opening and locking it during your job operations.

The design is meant to allow side dumping and there is a reason for that. You may be forced to do side dumping in areas where there isn’t sufficient space.

In such a situation, lateral offloading can be done using this side tipper. It helps in saving space. Thick steel plates are also put in place to prevent damages that may occur on the trailer with weak plates. 

Unlike with the rear tipper, the side tipper is suitable for cargo with a small rest angle. However, the side tipper can load more than the rear tipper.

Three: Types of Tilting Systems

 

There are two type of tilting systems:

  • The Direct-push type and
  • The Link rods type

 

3.1 Direct-Push Type

 

These are the most common types you will find out there in the market. It is a simple mechanism that directly pushes the trailer upwards in a clockwise direction to offload the cargo.

The bed plate of the trailer is tipped through the towing van moving it backwards.

The tow bar is normally hinged to sliding mechanism that is disposed under the bed plate and linked through a single connecting rod leading to the wheel that supports the frame usually hinged to the rear section of the bed plate.

When the sliding hinge is let to slide towards the back, the rod-frame-bed arrangement undergoes shape changes as the trailer continues to tip. 

You can lock the trailer in a desired position and still be tilted back around the wheels for the bed plate to occupy a higher horizontal level than that in the running position.

A direct push mechanism can be located at the front, the rear or at the middle section.

The front push is normally simple in structure and can provide you with a long stroke. The middle push is show in figure 5 below.

3.2 Link Rods Type

 

This is a somewhat indirect and sophisticated mechanism designed to achieve a more efficient lifting than for the direct push. Still, the mechanism pushes the trailer upwards in a clockwise direction to offload the cargo.

The tow bar in this case is hinged to sliding mechanism that is disposed under the bed plate,

and linked through a number of connecting rods leading to the wheel that supports the frame usually hinged to the rear section of the bed plate, just like in most tippers.

There are several moving rods that link up to transfer motion to the bed plate of the trailer to tip it through the towing van hence moving it backwards. See figure 7 below.

As the trailer continues to tip, the connecting rods-the frame and-the bed arrangement undergoes adjustments creating a balance at each position.

These link rods enhance the lifting operation by reducing the amount of effort required. Ideally, this type of tipper trailer provides uniform strength on van body and ensures reduced thrust.

Most importantly, the general mechanism has increased hydraulic cylinder efficiency. The assembly for the link rods type can be done either facing the front or the back as shown in figure 7 and figure 8 below respectively.

Four: Classification on Van Body Type

 

Tipper trailers can also be classified based on the van body type. Therefore, you can make a choice of what you want based on this to go for the:

  • The Box types, and
  • The U-type tipper trailers

 

4.1 The Box Type

The box type is rectangular in shape and is designed with less sophisticated features for your use. The tow bar is sufficiently strong to withstand towing forces needed during towing.

Additionally, it also designed to be strong in order to counteract the thrust forces experienced during the tipping of the trailer.  This is cheap and easy to produce.

It is the widely used option around the globe. The tow bar’s front end has a standard fastening with a coupling at the rear section. On the minimum, there are two fixing points that are available along the tow bar length.

They are used for fixing the bed plate of the trailer. One of the points is used for locking the trailer in while in running position and the other when in the table position. 

 

4.2 The U Type

 

The U-type tipper trailer is designed and fabricated in the shape as shown in figure 10 below. This type of trailer provides you with the following benefits in your job operations.

  • U type is Streamline and therefore, the unloading speed is faster and more thorough compared to other options you will find in the industry market.
